Fixing Wi-Fi dead spots and dropouts at home

"The Wi-Fi is bad" covers three completely different problems: the internet itself being down, weak coverage in parts of the house, and one device misbehaving. Sorting out which you have is most of the battle — and a surprising number of dead spots are fixed for free by moving one box.

Internet, modem, or Wi-Fi? Narrow it down first

These have different fixes, so establish which one you are dealing with before changing anything. A quick test settles it: if you can, plug a laptop into the modem with a cable — if that is fast and steady, your internet is fine and the problem is the Wi-Fi. If it drops on a cable too, it is the modem or the line, and that is one for your provider.

  • Everything down, everywhere — no device can connect — usually the modem or the internet service itself, not your Wi-Fi
  • Fine near the modem, bad far away — a classic coverage problem — the signal is not reaching where you need it
  • One device only — if just one laptop or phone struggles while others are fine, the fault is that device, not the network

The quick wins that fix most dead spots

Before buying anything, try these — they resolve the majority of "the back room has no Wi-Fi" complaints for nothing.

  • Move the modem — central and up high beats tucked in a cupboard, behind the TV, or on the floor in a corner — Wi-Fi radiates outward and downward
  • Clear the obstacles — brick, concrete, mirrors, metal and water tanks all block signal; so does sitting the modem inside a media cabinet
  • Restart it properly — power the modem off for 30 seconds — this clears congestion and reassigns clogged channels
  • Use the right band — 5GHz is much faster but shorter-range; 2.4GHz is slower but reaches further and through walls — devices should pick, but knowing helps
  • Update the firmware — an out-of-date modem is a common cause of random dropouts; check the maker's app or admin page

Check the signal on your device

Both systems can show you the actual signal strength where you are standing, which quickly proves whether a spot is genuinely weak or the device is the problem.

On Windows

  • Signal at a glance — the Wi-Fi icon's bars, plus Settings > Network & internet for the connection details
  • Forget and rejoin — forgetting the network and reconnecting clears a stale, flaky connection more often than you would think
  • Update the Wi-Fi driver — an old wireless driver causes dropouts; update it through Device Manager or the maker's support site
  • Built-in troubleshooter — Settings > System > Troubleshoot resolves a fair share of single-device Wi-Fi faults automatically

On a Mac

  • Real signal numbers — hold Option and click the Wi-Fi menu to see RSSI (signal) and noise — a big gap between them is a good connection
  • Wireless Diagnostics — hold Option, click Wi-Fi, choose Open Wireless Diagnostics for a guided check and a channel recommendation
  • Forget and rejoin — remove the network in System Settings > Wi-Fi > Details and reconnect to clear a stuck connection
  • Check the band — the same Option-click menu shows whether you are on 2.4 or 5GHz, which explains a lot about range

When you need more than one box: mesh vs extenders

If moving the modem is not enough — a long house, thick brick walls, a double storey — you need to spread the signal, not just boost it. A mesh system (several units that blanket the home in one network) or a wired access point is the proper fix. Cheap plug-in "extenders" or "boosters" can help a single dead spot, but most halve your speed and create a second network your devices cling to at the wrong moment. For anything beyond one small blind spot, mesh is the answer — ideally with the units wired back to the modem where possible.

Dropouts specifically

Signal that keeps dropping rather than being weak is usually one of a few things: channel congestion from neighbours' networks, an overheating or ageing modem, too many devices for the hardware, or a fault on the line itself. The cable test at the top tells you whether to fix it at home or call the provider — and if the modem is more than a few years old, replacing it often solves chronic dropouts on its own.

Common questions

Why is my Wi-Fi slow at the back of the house?

That is a coverage problem — the signal is weakening before it reaches you. Try moving the modem somewhere central and elevated first; if the layout is against you (long, double-storey, or thick brick), a mesh system or a wired access point is the real fix rather than a plug-in booster.

Do Wi-Fi extenders and boosters actually work?

For a single small dead spot, sometimes. But most halve your speed as they rebroadcast, and they create a second network your devices hang onto at the wrong times. For anything more than one blind corner, a proper mesh system gives a far better result.

Should I use 2.4GHz or 5GHz Wi-Fi?

5GHz where you can — it is much faster — and 2.4GHz where you need range or have to pass through walls, because it travels further. Most devices choose automatically, but if a far room struggles, it is often stuck reaching for the wrong band.

My internet drops out several times a day — is it my problem or the provider's?

The quickest way to tell is to plug a computer straight into the modem with a cable. If it still drops on a cable, it is the modem or the line — call your provider. If the cable is rock-solid and only Wi-Fi drops, it is a local coverage or interference problem we can sort out.
