What we repair

Most laptop problems fall into a handful of categories, and each has a different answer to "is this worth fixing?". We'll tell you which one you're looking at, and roughly what it involves, before any work starts.

  • Cracked or failed screens — on most Windows laptops the panel is a replaceable part, not a bonded assembly — see our dedicated laptop screen page
  • Battery and charging — a battery that no longer holds charge, won't charge at all, or a loose or broken DC power jack
  • Won't turn on — no power, no lights, or fans that spin with a black screen — usually one part, not a dead machine
  • Slow performance — the single biggest cause is a mechanical hard drive; an SSD and a little more memory transform an ageing laptop
  • Keyboard and trackpad — dead or sticking keys, a keyboard after a spill, or a trackpad that has stopped responding
  • Liquid damage — acted on quickly a spill is often recoverable — powered off, not charged, and looked at fast
  • Storage failure and data recovery — recovering what's on a failing drive before it goes completely
  • Overheating, Windows and virus faults — clogged cooling, startup problems, and genuine malware or scam clean-up

Every major brand — and the model number matters

Windows laptops ship a far wider range of parts than Macs do, so the first thing we'll ask for is your exact make and model. We repair across Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, Microsoft Surface, MSI, Razer and Samsung, and we repair Apple MacBooks too — the Mac side has its own page because the parts and the approach differ.

Repair or replace a laptop?

A laptop is less upgradeable than a desktop, but far more repairable than most people assume. A screen, a battery, an SSD or a charge port on an otherwise healthy machine is almost always cheaper than a new laptop and buys years more use. Where it stops making sense is a failed motherboard on an older machine, or a laptop that's also slow, out of storage and no longer getting Windows updates — and we'll tell you honestly when you've reached that point rather than quietly taking the work.

How we handle it

Call and describe what the laptop is doing — phone diagnosis is free, any hour, and some problems are solved in that call. We collect from across Melbourne's eastern suburbs and return the machine tested, handle software issues by secure remote session where we can, and take drop-offs at the Mitcham workshop by appointment. Everything comes back with a 30-day warranty on our workmanship.

Questions we get asked

My laptop won't turn on. Is it worth repairing?

Usually yes — "won't turn on" almost always comes down to one part, most often the charger, battery or power jack rather than the whole machine. We diagnose which it is before quoting, because replacing the wrong part is an expensive guess. Ring with the make and model and what it's doing; the diagnosis call is free.

Do you repair all laptop brands?

Yes — Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, Microsoft Surface, MSI, Razer and Samsung, plus Apple MacBooks. Parts and panels vary a lot between brands and models, which is why we always start from your exact model number.

Can you replace a laptop battery or fix charging?

Yes. We replace batteries that no longer hold charge and repair charging faults — a worn battery, a failing charger, or a loose or broken DC power jack. Windows reports battery health, so tell us what yours says and we can advise over the phone.

I spilled liquid on my laptop — can it be saved?

Often, if you act fast. Turn it off, don't charge it, don't try to "dry it out" by using it, and get it looked at quickly — liquid keeps corroding the board the longer it sits. The sooner we see it, the better the odds.

Can you make my slow laptop fast again?

Usually, and often dramatically. The biggest cause of a slow older laptop is a mechanical hard drive; moving to an SSD (and adding memory if it's short) makes the machine feel new for a fraction of a replacement. We'll check what's actually holding yours back before recommending anything.

Do you come to me, or do I bring it in?

Both. We collect from across Melbourne's eastern suburbs and return the laptop when it's done, help with software by secure remote session, and take drop-offs at our Mitcham workshop by appointment.
