The good news about most Windows laptops
Unlike a modern MacBook — where the screen is a single bonded assembly and therefore an expensive part — most Windows laptops use a separate LCD or OLED panel that connects to the motherboard with a video cable. That means the broken panel can usually be replaced on its own, without touching the lid, hinges or camera, which keeps the repair far more affordable than people expect. There are exceptions (premium convertibles with bonded touch glass, and Microsoft Surface), and we will tell you which category yours falls into before quoting.
What a broken laptop screen actually looks like
Not every display fault is a smashed panel, and the symptom often tells us the part and the cost before we have even seen the machine. These are the ones we see most:
- Cracked or shattered glass — spider-web cracks, black ink-like blotches or bleeding colour — a physical panel replacement
- Lines down the screen — vertical or horizontal coloured lines, usually a damaged panel or a loosened video cable
- Flickering or dimming — often a backlight or cable fault rather than the panel itself — sometimes a cheaper fix
- Black screen, laptop still running — fans on, lights on, nothing displayed — could be backlight, cable, or the display output, not always the panel
- Half the screen dead, or a bright/dark patch — pressure damage to the panel, common after something is closed inside the lid
- Loose or broken hinge — left too long, a failing hinge tears the video cable and turns a small job into a large one
Is it really the screen? A two-minute check
Before assuming the worst, plug the laptop into an external monitor or a TV with an HDMI cable. If the external display is perfect but the laptop's own screen is not, the fault is in the panel, cable or backlight — a screen repair. If the external display shows the same fault (distortion, artefacts, nothing at all), the problem is on the graphics or motherboard side, and replacing the panel would not fix it. We do this check before quoting, because telling you it is the cheaper fault is part of the job.
Panel types we fit
Windows laptops ship a much wider range of panels than Macs do, and matching the exact one matters — resolution, refresh rate, touch and brightness all have to be right.
- Standard FHD (1920×1080) — the most common panel, on the majority of consumer and business laptops
- QHD and 4K / UHD — higher-resolution panels on premium and creator machines
- OLED — increasingly common on ASUS, Dell, HP and Samsung premium lines — deeper blacks, and a different (dearer) panel
- High-refresh gaming panels — 120Hz, 144Hz, 165Hz and up on gaming laptops — must be matched or you lose the refresh rate
- Touchscreen and convertible — 2-in-1s and touch models, where the glass and digitiser may be bonded to the panel
Your data is safe
A screen replacement does not touch your storage. Your files, programs and settings are exactly where you left them — we are replacing the display, not the drive. If the machine also will not boot or you are worried about data, say so when you call and we will handle both.

We collect from across Melbourne's eastern suburbs, replace the panel on the bench at Mitcham with the machine properly opened up and tested, and return it to you — usually within a day or two once the correct panel is on hand. Drop-off at the workshop is available by appointment.

Why most Windows screens cost less than a Mac
On a modern MacBook the screen is one bonded unit — panel, glass, camera and hinges together — so it is an expensive part. Most Windows laptops keep the panel separate, so we replace just the broken screen and leave the lid, camera and hinges alone.
The main exceptions are 2-in-1 convertibles with bonded touch glass (HP x360, Lenovo Yoga, some Dell) and Microsoft Surface, which are built more like a MacBook. We will tell you which kind yours is before quoting.

It depends on the panel — a standard FHD screen on a mainstream laptop is one of the most affordable repairs we do, while an OLED, 4K, high-refresh gaming or bonded touchscreen panel costs considerably more. Is it worth replacing a laptop screen or should I buy a new laptop?
On most Windows laptops a screen is a standalone part, so replacing it costs a fraction of a new machine and the rest of the laptop keeps working as before. It stops being worth it only on very old, slow machines that have other problems too — and we will tell you honestly when that is the case rather than quietly taking the job.
Will I lose my files if I replace the screen?
No. Replacing the display has nothing to do with your storage — your files, apps and settings are untouched. The only exception is if the laptop also has a separate fault that stops it booting, which we would flag before starting.
My laptop screen is black but I can hear it running. Is the screen broken?
Not necessarily. Plug it into an external monitor: if that works normally, the fault is the panel, backlight or video cable — a screen repair. If the external display is also blank or distorted, the problem is elsewhere and a new panel would not fix it. That one check saves a lot of guesswork.

How long does a laptop screen replacement take?
Often a day or two, once the correct panel is on hand. Common FHD panels are quick to source; OLED, 4K, high-refresh and touch panels sometimes need to be ordered in. We will give you a realistic timeframe when we know your exact model.
