Why XDR displays are different

The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro use a mini-LED backlight with many individually controlled dimming zones, which is what gives them their contrast and brightness. It also makes the panel a significantly more complex and more expensive component than the Retina displays in earlier machines or in the Air. If you have been quoted a price that sounds too good for a 16-inch Pro, it is worth asking exactly which panel is being fitted.

Common MacBook Pro display faults

The Pro range sees a particular set of problems, partly because these machines travel and partly because they are worked hard.

• Cracked panel — usually pressure in a bag rather than a drop — a pen or charger against the lid is enough
• Backlight failure — a faint image visible under bright light, with no illumination behind it
• Hinge and lid damage — a loose hinge eventually strains the display cable, which turns a small repair into a large one
• Graphics artefacts — distortion that also shows on an external monitor points away from the screen entirely

Worth repairing?

On a MacBook Pro, usually yes. These are expensive machines with long useful lives, and a display fault on an otherwise healthy Pro is a strong case for repair rather than replacement. The exception is a machine that has other significant problems — a failing board, or an age where parts are becoming scarce. We assess the whole machine before recommending a screen, because fitting an expensive panel to a computer that is failing elsewhere helps nobody.
